 On World Biodiversity Day, May 22 2010, Iğdır Governor Saim Seffat Karahisarlı, director of Iğdır Environment & Forestry Department Taner Tazegün, who is the and KuzeyDoğa president Doç. Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu released a honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) and two steppe eagles (Aquila nipalensis) found injured and rehabilitated by Taner Tazegün. Doç. Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu celebrated everyone’s World Biodiversity Day and said the following: “United Nations declared the year 2010 as World Biodiversity Year in order to attract the attention of the world public opinion on the conservation of ecosystems which sustains the balance of life on earth. Because of that, World Biodiversity Day is even more important this year. Unfortunately biodiversity is declining rapidly all over the world. Human beings have the power to destroy or conserve biodiversity, but “nothing happens to nature” mindset keeps destroying the natural resources of the world. For instance thousands of birds are getting injured or being killed because of illegal poaching, car hits, striking buildings and towers, migratory exhaustion, power lines, and other causes. Caring people like Taner Tazegün, the director of Iğdır Environment & Forestry Department, are very rare. It is a must for Turkey to initiate wildlife veterinary education at universities and to establish wildlife rehabilitation centers. Our talks with Turkey’s General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks are finalized and the process for the establishment of a major wildlife rehabilitation center has started.”

 Dr. Powell ve Kuzeydoğa ekibi Kars ve Ardahan’da eşsiz bir macera yaşadı. WWF’nin (World Wildlife Fund-Dünya Yaban Hayatı Fonu) ABD Washington DC ofisinde kıdemli doğa koruma bilimci olarak çalışan Dr. George Powell, arkadaşı olan KuzeyDoğa Derneği başkanı ve Stanford Üniversitesi Biyoloji Bölümü Çevre Bilimleri Merkezi’nde öğretim üyesi Doç. Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu’nu ziyaret etmek için, 25 Mayıs Salı günü Kars’a geldi. Uzun zamandır KuzeyDoğa Derneği’nin projelerini görmek isteyen ve kuzeydoğu Anadolu’nun doğasını ve yaban hayatını çok merak eden Powell, ilk kez geldiği Türkiye’de, Kars, Ardahan ve Iğdır’ın uçsuz bucaksız düzlüklerine, misafirperver insanlarına ve yaban hayatına hayran kaldı. |

Kuyucuk Gölü Çevresindeki Köyler İçin İletişim ve Sürdürülebilir Doğa Turizmi Eğitimi Gerçekleştirdi |

 KuzeyDoğa ve HasNa dernekleri tarafından, 15-19 Mayıs 2010 tarihleri arasında, Kuyucuk köyü çevresindeki köylerde iletişim ve sürdürülebilir doğa turizmi eğitimi gerçekleştirildi. Kuyucuk Köyü’nde yapılan ve tüm çevre köy halkının davet edildiği eğitim çalışmalarına, Büyük Çatma, Duraklı ve Kuyucuk köylerinden yaklaşık 60 kişi katıldı. Kuyucuk Gölü’nün yakınında yaşayan halka doğal ve kültürel kaynaklarını korumada yardımcı olmak ve ekonomik durumlarını iyileştirmeleri için gölün sürdürülebilir turizm potansiyelini değerlendirmek eğitimin temel hedefleriydi. Kuyucuk Gölü’nün doğasını bozmadan alternatif bir gelir kaynağı sağlayacak sürdürülebilir doğa ve köy turizminin nasıl gerçekleşeceğinin anlatıldığı eğitime, ABD., Kanada ve Türkiye’den uzmanlar katıldı. Eğitim çalışmaları, Prof. Dr. Fikret Berkes, Doç. Dr. Mine Berkes, Doç. Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu, Emrah Çoban, Kathy Owen, Ferit Karakaya ve Deniz Sevgili-Oña tarafından gerçekleştirildi. |

Communication and sustainable nature tourism training for the local villagers around Lake Kuyucuk |

Training on communication and sustainable nature tourism is conducted for the villagers coming around Lake Kuyucuk on 15-19 May 2010. Villagers from Kuyucuk, Büyük Çatma and Duraklı were invited for the training and 60 of them in total attended the training which was held in Kuyucuk village. The main goals of the training were helping local villagers around Lake Kuyucuk to protect their cultural and natural values and discussing the potential of sustainable nature tourism of Lake Kuyucuk in order to improve their income level. The trainings and the talks were given by specialists from USA, Canada and Turkey. Training was carried out by Professor Fikret Berkes, Doç. Dr. Mine Berkes, Doç. Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu, Emrah Çoban, Kathy Owen and Deniz Sevgili-Oña. In a meeting held on May 15, 2010 in Kuyucuk village, Professor Fikret Berkes, Doç. Dr. Mine Berkes and Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu tried to understand the expectations of local people from nature tourism and identified their demands and ideas. It has been stressed that the protection of Lake Kuyucuk is a must in order to run sustainable nature tourism activities in the region and Kuyucuk villagers told about their infrastructure problems such as road, sewer system and garbage dump. It has been identified that local people should organize and establish unions in order to improve nature tourism and they also mentioned their demand for foreign language courses in order to communicate with foreign tourists coming to the lake. 16 people, mostly women from this first group completed the whole training later. |

 Kanada’nın Manitoba Üniversitesi’ndeki Doğal Kaynaklar Enstitüsü’nde Distinguished Profesör (Seçkin Profesör) ünvanına sahip olan Prof. Dr. Fikret Berkes ve eşi Doç. Dr. Mine Berkes, KuzeyDoğa Derneği başkanı ve Stanford Üniversitesi Biyoloji bölümü öğretim üyesi Doç. Dr. Çağan Şekercioğlu’nun misafiri olarak Kars’a geldi.
Fikret ve Mine Berkes’in, biyoçeşitlik ve ekoloji üzerine yayınları arasında, Ekoloji ve Çevre Bilimleri, Biyolojik Çeşitlilik, Çevre ve Ekoloji gibi önemli kitapları da bulunuyor. Yoğun programına rağmen Türkiye tatilini bölüp Kars’a gelen Profesör Berkes, Kafkas Üniversitesi Biyoloji Bölümü öğretim üyesi Yard. Doç. Dr. Mehmet Ali Kırpık’ın daveti üzerine, 14 Mayıs 2010 sabahı, Kafkas Üniversitesi Necdet Leloğlu Konferans Salonu’nda, “Doğal Kaynakların Kullanımında Yöre Halkının Önemi” konulu bir konuşma yaptı. |
